At Earthborn Landscape Design, we work in close partnership with our clients to create top-quality, waterwise landscape designs. We approach every design project with the goal of blending our clients’ wishes and needs with the requirements of the site to create outdoor living spaces that are beautiful, functional and sustainable.
Sally Guthart, owner and principal designer at Earthborn Landscape Design, brings more than a decade of design experience and plant knowledge to her work of creating beautiful and sustainable landscapes. She specializes in designing low-water landscapes (xeriscapes) with a strong focus on native plants. With an eye for color and detail, she creates landscapes that are a delight to view, a joy to be in, and a friendly place for pollinators.
Sally’s education and work experience for the past 15 years has been centered around plants and landscaping. Before that, she earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice, was a stay-at-home mom and active community volunteer. In 2004, she turned her love of the outdoors, her knowledge of plants, and her passion for design into a new career as a landscape designer. Her Associates of Applied Science in Horticulture and Landscape Technologies from Front Range Community College and Native Plant Master Certification from the Larimer County Extension at Colorado State University are complemented by earlier course work in color and design at Colorado State University and the University of California – Los Angeles.
A native plant enthusiast and avid hiker, Sally finds inspiration for her designs in the majesty of the mountains and the peaceful beauty of the prairies.
Sally’s skill in incorporating existing structures into a design of integrity that matches the style of the house is impressive. Her substantial knowledge and obvious love of plants gave me a landscape that is aesthetically pleasing throughout the seasons, interesting in its detail yet easy to maintain. During the installation, she was in constant contact with the installer and with me to solve any potential problems, for example problems involving drainage sites, and to make sure everything was done to perfection. It was.
Sally was highly recommended to us by one of her former clients. They said she was personable, a good listener, and very knowledgeable about the proper plants and ground scaping for the Front Range environment. We recently moved to Colorado and bought a new construction home. Having a totally blank canvas to work with Sally created a beautiful plan for us that is being implemented in stages as the seasons progress. We are very excited to soon be installing more plants that will not only beautify our yard but attract birds, bees, and butterflies!
I have known and worked with Sally Guthart for over 5 years. It has been a great and valued relationship. My husband and I moved to a house in 2010 which has spectacular views of the front range. But the home landscape had not been renewed in over 20 years. We were inundated by overgrown junipers throughout the yard. We were fortunate to have some lovely trees but far too much of our property was devoted to turf. We needed a plan which honored the solid backbone of the yard but re-envisioned a garden space which was welcoming and would cause the discerning visitor or friend to pause and look. Sally began the planning process by asking us in a questionnaire to define our goals and preferences for what we wanted our landscape to be. This process allowed us to get on the same page immediately before any drawings were put to paper. I relied on and trusted Sally to suggest plants which would do well in our area of Colorado. Sally is a fantastic plantswoman and I think this is so important to creating a garden that is unique and can also survive in our tough environment. Sally has come back every year to look at the garden, make recommendations about plants and help with new plant placement in the garden when needed. I have hired a few landscape designers to help with landscape renovations in other homes we have owned but I have run into no one like Sally who has been so involved over many years in evaluating our garden efforts and offering advice on potential change. She has introduced me to other great plantsmen in Northern Colorado which has augmented and enriched my knowledge of plants and the awesome people who nourish them. Her referrals to people who can put in hardscape or maintain our shrubs and trees have been invaluable. Are we pleased with our landscape efforts so far? Our garden never ceases to amaze us throughout the four seasons. I have had many neighbors who have stopped by and thanked my husband and I for creating a place of wonder and beauty. We are very grateful for Sally’s vision and extraordinary service.
When I first saw of Sally’s work at the Spring Creek Gardens, I was transfixed. Who knew a vegetable garden could be so lovely? I could not have guessed at the time that I would be lucky to have her help designing my own gardens. Having worked with Sally on two different plans, I have been so impressed with her ability to get a good read of very different sites and to create lovely and fitting plans for each. She designed the gardens I would have created myself if I only had the ability! Throughout the design process, Sally was unfailingly easy to communicate with, detail-oriented, and professional. She has a great breadth of knowledge of plants and hardscape. She can also make references for excellent plant suppliers and landscapers to implement the finished plan. It was a joy and privilege to work with Sally, and I recommend her without reservation.
I hired Sally to create a complete design for my entire, very plain, outdoor space. Sally is great to work with. She’s easy to talk to, flexible, very knowledgeable about local resources, and willing to take the time to share what she knows. Three years later, I’m still implementing her design, but she is still interested in how it’s going and willing to answer any questions. I have completed the back yard, and thanks to Sally’s vision, it has been transformed into a beautiful oasis.
Sally’s enthusiasm and plant knowledge made our project one of the most enjoyable and successful of our ‘remodeling’ ventures. Our north-side backyard space had been ignored for 20 years. With A/C units, old grape-stake fence and lack of plant life, it was a space to be avoided. Now, it has become our favorite place to spend some time in beautiful Colorado outdoors!
